Understanding Speaker Wire Gauges

By Hedrick Lepsch

Let's face it; we all want high-quality sound whether its in our living room, home theater room or automobile. We want to the sound of our movies, television shows and music to help us feel like we are part of the action.

Whether you are installing a car audio system or a home surround sound system, understanding speaker wire and the different gauges it is available in is extremely critical if you want to maximize the quality of the speakers you have purchased.

First, check to see how widespread the problem is. If it appears to be just your house, check your circuit breakers in your electric panel. If you blew a circuit, call your local service provider for help. If it is your neighborhood, call the local utility company and report the outage. If it is clear what the problem is, let them know.

Additionally, if, for example, a power line blew over, you'll need to warn the company (and alert the police) of the danger. For larger problems, most likely people are already working on it. It may take a while depending on the problem so make sure you are prepared.

Now, we're not talking bulky solar flashlights or those great, clunky, plastic flashlights that run off of triple D batteries. We are talking tactical flashlights, or at least small, compact, powerful universal flashlights. For self-defense purposes, you'll want something small. They should be able to fit in your pocket (at least men's pockets) or a bag you always have with you. Tactical flashlights are also very sturdy. They are often made military-grade aluminum and are very bright. They should also be easy to switch on. In the event of an attack, you're going to need FAST access.

Typically, a "gauge" number labels the thickness of speaker wire. Most of the speaker wire that is available for purchase is between 12 and 16 gauge. In this case, the lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire. Thicker wire possesses a higher capacity to pass through an amplified audio signal. So what does this mean for you?

When deciding what gauge of wire is best, you need to evaluate the quality of your speakers and audio components, the type of sound quality you desire, and of course, how much money you want to spend. One thing that is commonly ignored is the distance between your speakers and the amplifier powering them. This is a mistake, because if your speakers are located a ways away, the long run of wire can reduce power.

For this, you would require the use of thicker speaker wire. You may also want to consider lower gauge (thicker) speaker wire if you are setting up a surround sound home theater system or if you have a whole home audio system with speakers in various rooms.

If you have a wood burning stove or fire place, build a fire and huddle around. If you don't, make sure to wear several layers of clothing, especially knit hats, scarves and gloves. If you are still cold, take a hot shower to warm up your body temperature.

If there are elderly or sick people in your neighborhood, it would be good to check on them and make sure that they are taken care of. Especially if they rely on electricity for medical support, you'll need to make sure they are safe and warm.

If that didn't work (or if you are caught by surprise) the first thing you want to do is blind your assailant. If they are creeping in the dark, a bright light to the eyes will completely disorient them for at least 3-4 seconds. That is plenty of time to strike out or get away. Step Three: React
