Bike Flags Help To Make Riding A Bike Safe

By Marcie Goodman

Bicycling can be an enjoyable and useful activity to participate in. One of the great things about riding a bike is that it can be done alone or in a group. In fact, it is an excellent family activity. There are several safety items thats use should be considered when riding. Some of those items are, a helmet, body armour, reflectors, gloves and lights. Bike flags are also an important safety item to use.

While bicycling is usually a safe thing to do, sometimes accidents happen. If a person should wreck their bike, they risk sustaining injury to their head. This is why children and adults alike should wear a helmet that is certified for bicycling. When choosing the right fit, the helmet should fit snuggly enough that it will not fall off during impact. A good fit will ensure that the head is properly protected should an accident occur.

Because body armour can be hot and restrict movement, it is not a popular item among riders. In fact, unless a person participates in extreme riding, this equipment might not be that necessary. However, extreme riders will find that shin guards and other protective gear can help them to remain uninjured in a crash. Parents whose children are not extreme riders should teach their kids about bicycle safety rather than make them wear body armour.

The use of reflectors and reflecting materials is vital to the safety of the rider. Most bikes come with a red rear reflector that sits just under the seat. They will likely also have reflecting pieces in the tire spokes, the pedals and on the front of the bike. While these pieces will not specifically identify the bike as such, they will catch the attention of motorists. Many riders will also wear reflective clothing or place reflective tape on their helmets.

Riders who are on their bikes for a long time will find that wearing gloves can be useful in protecting their skin. There are many styles and materials to choose from. For those who enjoy riding in the winter, down mittens will help to keep their hands warm. Thinner gloves can offer a lot of protection in an accident.

In order to alert approaching motorists that a bicycle is ahead, one should add flashing lights to the rear of the bike. A headlight should be added the front in order to add visibility.

Flags are another item that alerts others of a riders presence. Those riding for long distances on the open road find that the flags are helpful in making their existence known. They are also a popular safety item with those riding on recumbents because they are so low to the ground, they are less visible.

While bicycling can be fun, it, like every other activity, can be dangerous. The use of items, such as, bike flags, gloves, reflectors, lights and helmets can go a long ways in making it a safe thing to participate in. Learning the ins and outs of riding safely along with taking some safety precautions can go a long ways in making it an enjoyable activity for people of all ages.
