Functions Performed By A Government

By Loris F. Andres

A government is a very important institution. Through it, people get to live a peaceful life and conduct their day to day activities without any worry. The types of administrations present in different parts of the world vary. There are those that have been democratically elected while others have come to be by means of force or coups.

Citizens have rights and privileges which they get to enjoy for belonging to a particular state or country. These are rights and privileges that have been set up by the regime in charge. In addition to setting this up, the regimes will also ensure that order is enforced throughout.

The reason society follows the regulations and laws enacted by government officials are because society plays a role in selecting the regime of the day. This is done through elections. Elections are conducted in different times and follow different procedures as may be set out in the existing laws.

Another duty that must be performed is that of offering protection. Citizens must be protected from all types of threats. Threats can take different forms ranging from hunger, war to terrorism. A regime must have measures in place to make sure that all these threats are neutralized.

Administrations are there to act as a safety net for all the citizens residing within their jurisdictions. It is the duty of each regime to make sure that all citizens have their most basic and minimum needs met. Sanitation and education are services that have traditionally been offered by management teams.

All societal members have to pay tax to the central government. Taxes are collected and then budgeted for before being distributed to the local authorities. Collection of taxes has to be done in order to make sure that the economy gets to grow at a stable rate.

Foreign policy has to be formulated. Since all citizens cannot be involved in its formulation, the regime in place has to do this for the country. This foreign policy will then determine how this country will interact with its neighboring friends. A country cannot survive by itself without the help of others.

Each government comes in to place in order to fulfill a certain mandate to its people. Through the regimes, services are offered to the masses. Peace and order is also maintained thereby making sure that no one gets hurt while within the boundaries of a particular regime. All these are functions that each administration has to fulfill.
